The project

Accomplished American ultra runner Scott Jaime travelled to South Africa in November 2014 to embark on a journey of discovery, a trail running adventure through the heart of the iconic Swartberg Mountains, and surrounding Karoo region in the Western Cape. A Journey To Black Mountain will be the story of this trip, showcasing Scott's interaction with the local culture and landscape, all the while traversing some of the most beautiful trails in the country.

Objectives of the film

      • To further introduce and present Scott Jaime to the global trail running community
      • To capture the beauty and significant natural and cultural value of the Swartberg and Karoo regions of South Africa
      • To introduce the region of South Africa as a world class running destination, showcasing the role players responsible for protecting this region and supporting sponsors of the project, Cape Nature
      • To document the significance of the trails chosen for the running element of the film, including but not limited to; the Donkey Trail (ancient trading route); Swartberg Pass (140 year old high mountain pass linking two significant trading towns); Gamkaskloof and Elands Pass (an isolated community famous for its eccentric residents and lush agricultural lands, now a UNESCO world heritage site as part of the Cape Floral Region)
      • To ultimately develop inspirational content that assists in further growing the sport of trail running and general outdoor lifestyle orientation

Who is Scott Jaime?

Scott Jaime is an American ultra runner haling from Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is a member of both the Pearl Izumi and UltrAspire elite athlete teams and current fastest-known-time record holder of the Colorado Trail. If asked what his favorite race is, he would say the Hardrock 100 where he has been on the podium several times. This was Scott's first trip to South Africa:

"Often times we are insulated with a society that provides everything needed to survive.  Running in the mountains of Colorado has provided me an outlet to experience life with a sense of freedom and isolation while stripping away the material things provided in my life.  The opportunity to experience a new country and culture, in which modes of transportation is often by foot to provide necessities simply for living, was an eye-opening experience for me and one that has left me asking many more questions about how to lead a more simple life."
